Social Realism Examples

Although Social Realism is a small genre with a niche fan base due to its gritty style almost anyone with the right knowledge can create a Social Realism, but very few can produce one that generates a wide popularity like The Full Monty or This is England did, that makes directors like Shane Meadow that much more iconic as although they can create films with low budgets and basic technology they can still make a huge impact on the film industry.

There many films within the genre of Social Realism but a few examples are films such as:

Kes (A Kestrel For A Knave Adaptation)
Released in 69 and directed by Ken Loach this adaption followed the life of a young boy (Billy Casper), who is constantly bullied, both at home and at school. he finds an outlet through training a kestrel that he takes from a nest on a farm. The film revolves around the bond that grows between the two and how they are effected by surrounding events.

Outlaw
- This is a more modern example of a social realism, created in 2007 this film follows a group of people who feel betrayed by their government and let down by their police force, they form a modern-day "outlaw posse" in order to right what they see as the wrongs of society.

Trainspotting
- A hugely successful Realism which made history, the film deals with the difficulty of life and covers topics such as death, drugs, sex and unemployment, the story resolves mainly around "Renton" but also his group of friends.

This Is England
- After winning many awards, creating a spin off TV series and being considered as Shane Meadows biggest hit, the film the shows Shawn's life growing up after the death of his father in the Falklands war, it covers many topics as it focuses on England time of change caused by Margret Thatcher.
